PSI Bridge & Secure Browser: Fixing Launch, Camera and Proctor Handoff Errors
PSI online proctored exams fail most often at the secure browser launch and the proctor handoff. Here is the full diagnostic path for real estate, insurance and state licensure candidates.

PSI delivers a large share of U.S. state licensure exams — real estate, insurance, contractor, cosmetology, security — both in test centers and online through the PSI Bridge platform with a downloadable secure browser. Because these exams are state-regulated, PSI's remote rules and reinstatement processes are less flexible than commercial certification vendors. Getting the technical setup right the first time matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Before exam day: the compatibility check
PSI provides a compatibility or system check link in the confirmation email. Run it on the same personal computer and network, and repeat it the day before. Verify: supported OS version, working camera and microphone, administrator rights, no VPN, no employer device-management restrictions, and sufficient upload bandwidth.
The secure browser will not download or launch
The secure browser is downloaded fresh at launch time in many PSI deployments, so a browser or antivirus that blocks the download blocks the exam.
Fixes: allow downloads from the PSI domain; approve the Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper prompt; temporarily disable antivirus real-time web shields; grant macOS Screen Recording, Camera and Microphone permissions and relaunch; disconnect any second monitor before launch, because the secure browser refuses to run with multiple displays; and close remote-access, conferencing and recording tools.
If the browser opens and immediately closes, a background process is the cause. Reboot the machine, launch nothing else, then start the exam.
Camera black or "device in use"
Same root cause as every other platform: another application holds the webcam. Reboot, then launch only the secure browser. For an external webcam, use a direct USB port. Confirm the camera works in a simple system camera app first to isolate hardware from software.
Waiting for the proctor / handoff failures
After launch you wait for a live proctor to verify identity and complete the room scan. Delays happen; stay in frame and do not close the window. If the wait exceeds the time stated in your confirmation, use the on-screen chat or call PSI support and note the case number — for state licensure, that number is what your regulator will want if you request a reschedule without penalty.
ID and environment requirements
Bring a physical, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with a name matching your registration exactly. Clear the desk completely: no notes, no phones, no smartwatch, no headphones, no second device, no hats. State exams often permit an on-screen calculator only — no physical one. Reference materials are only allowed where the state explicitly authorizes them, and if permitted they must be shown to the proctor during the scan.
After a failed session
Screenshot everything, get a case number during the session, and contact both PSI and your state licensing board or the exam sponsor the same day. Fees and retake eligibility for licensure exams are governed by the regulator, not by PSI, so the board's documentation requirements are the ones that decide the outcome.
The universal pre-exam checklist
Roughly nine out of ten proctoring incidents trace back to the same five conditions. Run this list the day before, not fifteen minutes before.
- Use the same machine, browser and network you will test on. A system check passed on a laptop at home does not certify the desktop at work.
- Reboot fully. A cold restart releases the camera handle that Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS, Snap Camera or Windows Camera quietly kept open.
- Update the browser and the secure application. Version mismatch is the single most common launch failure.
- Test upload, not download. Live proctoring streams video *out*. You need a stable 1.5–3 Mbps upload; a 500 Mbps download does not help if upload collapses.
- Disable VPNs, proxies, corporate firewalls, parental filters and antivirus web shields. Managed work or school devices block the ports proctoring platforms use, and administrators cannot always unblock them in time.
Fast diagnostic sequence when something breaks
1. Note the exact error code or message and screenshot it — support resolves coded errors in minutes and vague descriptions in hours.
2. Check whether the failure is *device*, *network* or *account*. Device: the check fails offline too. Network: it fails only on this connection. Account: it fails on every device.
3. Switch one variable at a time: hotspot instead of Wi-Fi, Chrome instead of Edge, second machine, guest OS profile.
4. Re-run the vendor system check and save the report ID.
5. Contact live support *before* the appointment window closes — most vendors will not reinstate a session once you have exceeded the launch grace period.
What to do if the session is lost anyway
If the exam terminates, do three things immediately, in this order: screenshot the error, open the vendor's live chat and get an incident or case number, and email your institution or licensing board the same day with that number attached. Reinstatement decisions almost always hinge on documented, timestamped evidence created during or immediately after the incident — not on a request filed a week later.
Then use the retake window deliberately. Rehearse the launch flow on the exact machine, run one full-length timed practice test under the same conditions, and treat the technical setup as part of your study plan rather than an afterthought.
