Proctorio Problems Explained: Every Common Error, Diagnostic and Fix
Why Proctorio fails to start, freezes at the camera check, flags you for suspicious behavior, or crashes Chrome — with step-by-step diagnostics and fixes that actually work.

Proctorio is a Chrome (and Edge) extension rather than a downloadable application, which makes it the lightest of the major proctoring platforms and also the most sensitive to browser state. It records webcam, microphone, screen and sometimes keystroke and mouse telemetry, then scores the session with an automated behavior model. No live human watches you in real time on most deployments; an instructor reviews flags afterward.
That architecture explains nearly every problem candidates report.
"Proctorio is not installed" or the exam never starts
The most common cause is that the exam link was opened in a browser profile that does not have the extension, or in an incognito window where extensions are disabled by default.
Fix, in order:
1. Open `chrome://extensions`, confirm Proctorio is present, enabled, and has "Allow in Incognito" turned on if you use private windows.
2. Remove and reinstall from the official Proctorio install link your school provides — never a third-party mirror.
3. Sign in to the *correct* Chrome profile. Work-managed profiles frequently block extension installs silently.
4. Restart Chrome completely (quit the process; closing the window is not enough on macOS).
If the exam is delivered inside Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle or D2L, launch the quiz from the course page rather than from a bookmark or emailed deep link.
Camera fails, freezes, or shows a black screen
Proctorio requests the camera through the browser. If another program is holding the device, the feed appears black or the check spins forever.
Diagnostics: open `chrome://settings/content/camera`, confirm the correct device is selected as default and that the site is not blocked. Then visit any camera test page — if the webcam fails there too, the problem is the operating system, not Proctorio.
Fixes: quit Zoom, Teams, Discord, Snap Camera, OBS and any manufacturer camera utility; on Windows check Settings → Privacy → Camera and allow desktop apps; on macOS check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable Chrome; unplug and replug an external webcam into a *direct* USB port, not a hub; then reboot.
The pre-checks pass but the exam freezes mid-way
Freezes are almost always memory or bandwidth. Proctorio buffers video locally and uploads continuously. Close every other tab — students routinely sit with thirty tabs open and 95% RAM usage. Disable other extensions during the exam, particularly ad blockers, VPN clients, Grammarly and screen recorders, all of which can conflict with the exam frame.
If the connection drops, do not close the tab. Proctorio can usually resume when the network returns; closing the browser is what ends the attempt permanently.
Why you were flagged and what it actually means
A flag is not an accusation. Proctorio produces a colored suspicion bar generated by heuristics: eyes leaving the screen, multiple faces, background noise, tab switches, unusual copy-paste, abnormally fast answers. An instructor reviews the recording and decides. Most flags are benign — reading a question aloud, a family member walking past, glancing at scratch paper.
To keep the report clean: sit in a quiet room with the door closed, face a plain wall, keep lighting *in front* of you rather than behind, keep hands and face visible, avoid muttering, and never open another tab even to use a permitted calculator unless the instructor authorized it.
Chromebooks, Macs and locked-down devices
Proctorio supports Chromebooks only when your institution deploys the Chromebook-specific version and the device is enrolled correctly. Managed Chromebooks issued by a K-12 district often block the required permissions; that is an administrator setting, not something you can fix from the exam screen. On macOS, screen-recording permission for Chrome must be granted explicitly or the desktop capture check fails with a generic error.
The universal pre-exam checklist
Roughly nine out of ten proctoring incidents trace back to the same five conditions. Run this list the day before, not fifteen minutes before.
- Use the same machine, browser and network you will test on. A system check passed on a laptop at home does not certify the desktop at work.
- Reboot fully. A cold restart releases the camera handle that Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS, Snap Camera or Windows Camera quietly kept open.
- Update the browser and the secure application. Version mismatch is the single most common launch failure.
- Test upload, not download. Live proctoring streams video *out*. You need a stable 1.5–3 Mbps upload; a 500 Mbps download does not help if upload collapses.
- Disable VPNs, proxies, corporate firewalls, parental filters and antivirus web shields. Managed work or school devices block the ports proctoring platforms use, and administrators cannot always unblock them in time.
Fast diagnostic sequence when something breaks
1. Note the exact error code or message and screenshot it — support resolves coded errors in minutes and vague descriptions in hours.
2. Check whether the failure is *device*, *network* or *account*. Device: the check fails offline too. Network: it fails only on this connection. Account: it fails on every device.
3. Switch one variable at a time: hotspot instead of Wi-Fi, Chrome instead of Edge, second machine, guest OS profile.
4. Re-run the vendor system check and save the report ID.
5. Contact live support *before* the appointment window closes — most vendors will not reinstate a session once you have exceeded the launch grace period.
What to do if the session is lost anyway
If the exam terminates, do three things immediately, in this order: screenshot the error, open the vendor's live chat and get an incident or case number, and email your institution or licensing board the same day with that number attached. Reinstatement decisions almost always hinge on documented, timestamped evidence created during or immediately after the incident — not on a request filed a week later.
Then use the retake window deliberately. Rehearse the launch flow on the exact machine, run one full-length timed practice test under the same conditions, and treat the technical setup as part of your study plan rather than an afterthought.
